Junior Hockey Is Back: Five Leagues to Watch as the 2026–27 Season Opens

The junior hockey season is moving from training camp to meaningful games. The NA3HL has already given us results to discuss. The NCDC, USPHL Premier, EHL and EHLP are preparing for their opening stretch, when new line combinations, young goaltenders and returning players finally get tested against someone in a different jersey.
NA3HL: Early Scores Are Already Turning Heads
Louisiana has made the loudest early statement. The Drillers beat Bayou State 11–1, 18–0 and 15–0 in a three-game series, improving to 6–0 through September 13. Those scores will draw attention, but the more useful question over the coming weeks is how Louisiana responds when games get tighter. Elsewhere, Peoria erased a four-goal deficit to beat Wisconsin 6–5 in overtime, Rochester came back to beat West Bend 3–2 in a shootout, and Pelham opened its season Wednesday with a 6–3 win over Bayou State. NCDC: The First Week Sets the Tone
In the NCDC, the opening matchups matter because teams are still learning what they have. Watch how quickly defensive pairs settle in, which lines can sustain pressure, and whether a team can play its style away from home. In the Metropolitan Conference, the New England Wolves join a group that includes the Boston Jr. Bruins, Boston Jr. Rangers, Islanders Hockey Club, Northern Cyclones, South Shore Kings and Worcester Railers JHC. USPHL Premier: Opportunity Across a Huge League
The USPHL describes Premier as a league of more than 75 teams. That scale creates opportunities for players across many regions, and it also means the opening weeks can look different from one division to another. For coaches, the first priority is establishing habits: reliable breakouts, responsible changes and players who understand their roles. For players, it is a chance to show they can earn trust consistently, not just produce one strong shift. USPHL league overview
EHL and EHLP: Opening Day Arrives September 24
The EHL and EHLP have announced Thursday, September 24 as opening day. Two EHL matchups stand out immediately: expansion club Hershey Cubs at Pennsylvania Huntsmen and fellow newcomer Elite Golden Knights at East Coast Wizards. The EHLP opens with the Valley Jr. Warriors at Connecticut Nor’Easter, marking Valley’s return to the Premier division. There is also a visibility issue worth raising as the season approaches. I could not find populated 2026–27 team rosters on the league pages reviewed for this article. Families, scouts and fans should be able to see who is playing as the games begin. The Events landing page also does not clearly present the upcoming showcases. The showcases have been announced, however: the league lists its Ice Breaker for October 1–4 in Walpole, Massachusetts, with later events in December and March. The first games will give every team a starting point. What matters next is how players and coaches respond: who improves after a difficult weekend, who builds chemistry, and who turns early promise into dependable hockey. That is why this time of year is so much fun to watch.
