College hockey returns in October with plenty to watch before the first puck drops. Denver enters the men’s season as the defending national champion. St. Thomas begins a new chapter in the NCHC. Out West, the NCHC will be fascinating. Denver has set the standard, but repeating requires a new group to handle everyone’s best game. St. Thomas makes its NCHC debut at Miami on October 30, the opening weekend of conference play. In the Big Ten, every weekend feels like a test. Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, and Notre Dame make up a conference where a promising start can be challenged quickly. The eastern races should offer their own drama. Hockey East brings another season of rivalries, while Quinnipiac enters ECAC play as the coaches’ preseason favorite. Atlantic Hockey America gets underway immediately: Niagara and RIT meet October 2–3 in the league’s opening series. The changing development path is another story to follow. CHL players became eligible for Division I men’s hockey beginning with the 2025–26 season, giving programs and players another route into college hockey. There are good opening-week matchups to circle. Boston University travels to Alaska for October 2–3, Arizona State opens at Lindenwood on those same dates, and Niagara hosts RIT on October 2 before the teams meet again in Rochester the following night.
