CHL Watch: The Teams Setting the Early Pace
By Andrew Trimble | The Hockey Focus
November is when junior hockey starts to reveal a team’s identity. A strong opening weekend gets attention, but sustained success requires depth, consistency and the ability to respond when games become difficult. Across the Canadian Hockey League, several clubs are making an early statement.
Here are six teams worth watching, using the CHL’s November 3 rankings as the statistical snapshot.
Val-d’Or Foreurs: Setting the Standard
Val-d’Or reached No. 1 nationally with a 14-1-1-0 record and 10 consecutive victories. Philippe Veilleux powered the attack with 16 goals and 36 points. That combination of individual production and sustained team success makes the Foreurs an obvious early headline.
Spokane Chiefs: Consistency Out West
Spokane’s 10-1-0-1 start included points in 11 of its first 12 games, earning the Chiefs the No. 2 ranking. From a coaching perspective, that consistency is significant: successful teams keep collecting points even when every night does not produce their best performance.
Guelph Storm: Multiple Ways to Hurt You
Third-ranked Guelph opened 12-3-0-0. Ryan Roobroeck’s 14 goals, Owen Griffin’s 17 assists and Vladimir Dravecky’s 20 points from defence highlighted its offensive range. For opponents, production from different positions creates difficult coverage decisions.
Victoriaville Tigres: Dangerous Until the Buzzer
Victoriaville climbed to fifth at 12-3-0-1 after five straight wins. Consecutive comeback victories over Halifax and Rimouski featured four third-period goals in each game. The coaching takeaway is clear: against this group, protecting a lead requires a full 60 minutes.
Kingston Frontenacs: Momentum Meets Goaltending
Kingston entered the national rankings at No. 9 after winning nine of 11. Royden Smith stopped 42 of 43 shots during victories over Peterborough and Brantford. Strong goaltending gives a developing team room to build confidence and sharpen its execution.
Red Deer Rebels: Finding Answers Under Pressure
Red Deer entered at No. 10 following three consecutive comeback wins. That response to adversity makes the Rebels another team worth tracking as the schedule progresses.
For young players watching these teams, look beyond the highlights. Watch the support away from the puck, the decisions under pressure and the response after a mistake. Those habits are where a promising start becomes a season a team can sustain.
