North of the Border: Danny Weight Continues His Development In The BCHL - The Hockey Focus
Danny Weight

After two years in the U.S. National Team Development Program (USNTDP), overshadowed offensively by the likes of current NHLer Jack Hughes and Wisconsin standout Cole Caufield, Danny Weight has found his scoring stride in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL).

Weight is a 2001 birth year forward and son of former NHL all-star Doug Weight. He has committed to Boston College for the 2020-21 season but opted to play for the Penticton Vees this year instead of staying in United States Hockey League.

The Vees are one of the most storied Junior A franchises in Canada and are notorious for sending players to high-end Division I schools.

Weight is currently fourth on the team in scoring with 17-26-43 numbers, which is good for 10th overall in the BCHL. Of note with this year’s Vees team, which leads the Interior Division and has already clinched a playoff spot, is the fact three of their top five scorers are from the United States. Weight is the third-leading American scorer overall in the BCHL and one of three NHL legacy players on the Vees’ roster as Jackson Niedermayer (Scott Nidermayer) Tristan Amonte (Tony Amonte) help round out the squad.

As a 16U player with the PAL Junior Islanders program in 2016-17 Weight put up 120 points in 83 games, which is the offensive upside that BC locked into during that season. He will will look to add his scoring touch to the Eagles lineup next year where will be joining former BCHL superstar Alex Newhook.

Weight was passed up in last year’s NHL entry draft but is listed as one of five BCHL C-level prospects for the 2020 draft by NHL Central Scouting.
